Few things about amfilochia’s past…

In the position where Amfilochia is built now, 200 years ago there was a chani where the ‘’charabans’’ used to pass their nights. Nearly there was a village called Ambrakia. In 1826, while the ottomans were coming back after the second siege of Mesologgi they burned Ambrakia. The villagers built new houses near the region and the new village created, called Karvasaras.  In 1907 the village’s name changed and now it is known as Amfilochia in the honor of the king Amfilochos.

Amfilochia now VS amfilochia in the past…

Aproximately until the century of 1960-1970  Amfilochia was very different from now. Instead of the nowadays hospital there was a big square with huge trees and a well. There was also another well in the position of the national road Amfilochia-Agrinio near the national bank. The port of Amfilochia wasn’t exist. In the place of the town hall there was a small lake known as ‘’Pelagaki’’ where the women were washing their clothes.

Amfilochia’s nightlife is quite limited in winter months. But during the summer in Amfilochia each one can enjoy the nightlife every night. Walking by the sea, all the people can drink a coffee in our beautiful café or to taste fresh seafood in the graphic restaurants. Especially for young people there are many nightclubs where they can revel until morning.

Panakarnaneia in the past…

Panakarnaneia, as indicated by their name, was in the past and continues to be the most significant event in the whole culture of Akarnania. The cultural center of Amfilochia founded in 1978 and is the core of cultural activities in Amfilochia and organizes every year the cultural and folkloric events which called Panakarnaneia. Panakarnaneia organized each year in Amfilochia but they didn’t too long in the past but only a week between July and August. They included concerts, traditional dances from local association or from other countries. Panakarnaneia included theatrical performances inside the acropolis of ancient Limnaia. The most special, though, night was the night of ‘’varkarola’’. In former times the troubadours of Amfilochia prowled around the beach with boats and overwhelmed the peaceful water of Amvrakikos. Over the years, the custom of ‘’varkarola’’ has revived through the Panakarnaneia.

 Panakarnaneia in our days…

''varkarola''
Nowadays the custom of Panakarnaneia hasn’t change more from the past, but they have improved. Every summer for about a month Panakarnaneia take place in the center square of Amfilochia or at the port of the town. They include many activities for the residents of the town, many dance performances and some plays (drama or comedy), which take place at the port and not in the ancient Limnaia. Finally still in our days ‘’varkarola’’ is the most important and impressive night, where all the residents professional musicians or not cross the sea singing memorable songs. That night all the residents of the town are there to attend the event.
